John Coxon/Paul Lytton/Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith/Pat Thomas/Alex Ward

Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith

Pat Thomas (piano and electronics) and Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith (trumpet) share a deep relationship with a kind of American tonalism historically related to free jazz and its developments. John Coxon (guitar) and Alex Ward (clarinet) exhibit a sort of postmodern pan-musicalism in their improvisation and are as likely to reference, say, The Ex or The Fall as any kind of jazz or classical music. Paul Lytton (percussion) could be cast as the European modernist of the group, having long since divested his sophisticated playing of jazzy nuance. Finding common ground within these three aesthetic and cultural strands should prove interesting . . .
