Louis Moholo-Moholo/Steve Noble/Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith

"When I asked Leo what kind of grouping he would like to play with, he suggested a trumpet trio with two drummers. I asked Steve Noble and Steve suggested Louis Moholo-Moholo. Steve is one of those great players who has no problem careering from the early swing of Baby Dodds to post-Oxley modernism and back without missing a beat. Louis, the last of the Blue Notes, likewise is capable of great swing and power, but also has a uniquely sensitive micro-temporal side to his playing (for example, his extraordinarily graceful duo with Roger Smith on Emanem). The combination of these two players with Wadada's authoritative spiritual playing promises to be a highlight of the festival. Leo's 2009 CD 'America' with Jack de Johnette was described as 'exuding a primordial timelessness reminiscent of an extended ritual invocation' (Troy Collins) and that wonderful drums/trumpet recording on John Zorn's Tzadik label gives us some idea of what to expect from this intriguing group, which represents an extension and redoubling of that idea." - John Coxon
